Goodbye Melbourne
Six out of seven Volvo Open 70’s are back on the ocean for the third leg from Melbourne to Wellington / NZL. After three exciting weeks in Australia, the starting gun was fired on Sunday February 12th. Thousands of spectators waved the sailors goodbye and chased them till far in Port Phillip Bay. Team Brunel stayed behind, since they have pulled out for three legs and will restart in Baltimore.
With the teams leaving the dock, it is time for me to go home. The last images are online now. Anybody who is interested in photographs or an interview with the two young Dutch crew members of ABN AMRO 2, Gerd-Jan Poortman and Simeon Tienpont, please contact me. I talked to them extensively after their finish in Melbourne.
It has been a great trip, which has resulted in an article on the memorable Sydney Hobart Race in Nautique, one on the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race in Zeilen, several updates on www.zeilen.com, a compilation of interviews with Dutch Olympic sailors who spent their winter Down Under, an interview with the Belgian Tornado crew Carolijn Brouwer and Sebbe Godefroid in the Belgian magazine Varen and an interview with Hans Horrevoets from ABN AMRO 2 in a local newspaper.
